Czech Army decided it needed a Medium tank. Czech companies CKD submitted the V-8-H for testing and Skoda submitted the T-21 for testing. Czech Army chose CKD’s design.
Then Germany invaded. Germany took over 35t and 38t light tanks. Germany wasnt interested in Czech medium tanks as they felt PzII and PzIV were better.
Germany sort of offered/brokered agreement for Hungary to purchase rights for T-21.
Hungary tested T-21 but found lots of problems with engine overheating, transmission problems, and such. Hungary modified design to use different electrical system and Hungarian radios and machine guns.
So Turan is a Hungarian tank but its based off a design from Czech company Skoda which was modified to Hungarian standards. Turan was a excellent tank for the time it was designed in but delays kept it from entering service til it was all but obsolete. Hungarian tanks suffered very heavy losses to Soviet T-34/76’s.
Turan I =40mm main gun
Turan II-75mm L/25 main gun, roughly comparable to German 75mm L/24 on PzIVD-F1
Turan IIIM was a attempt to mount a gun capable of knocking out a T-34 at more than 300m range. Gun was based off Hungarian version of license copy of PAK 40. Comparable to German 75mm L/43 gun on PzIV F2-G.
